The story of the rebellious southern farmer Newt Knight ( Matthew McConaughey ) and his armed revolt against the Confederacy. Knight, along with other small farmers and local slaves, ignited an uprising that resulted in the separation of the Jones County of Mississippi from the Confederacy and the establishment of the Free State of Jones.
