Blood Meridian

When Cormac McCarthy published his fifth novel, Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West, in 1985, it received only a lukewarm and hesitant reception. Over time, however, interest from both readers and critics grew, and today the book enjoys almost cult status—it is described as McCarthy's magnum opus and one of the most important American novels of the 20th century. In this historical novel, the author describes the rampage of the Glanton Gang on the Texas-Mexico border in 1849–1850. The vast majority of the events and characters are real, with the fictional fate of the protagonist, the nameless "kid", woven into the plot.

What fundamentally distinguishes Blood Meridian from other historical prose, however, is the author's distinctive style and the depth of his philosophical vision. To describe brutal violence and the merciless wasteland, the author uses an archaic, biblical-baroque language that also serves as a cryptic medium, alluding to various schools of thought: the mystical Christianity of Jakob Böhme, Friedrich Nietzsche's will to power, ancient Gnostic teachings, and the tarot arcana. As for artistic parallels, it is impossible not to mention Homer's Iliad, Dante's Inferno, or Melville's Moby Dick, the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, or Sam Peckinpah's westerns. Blood Meridian offers an experience that is not only piercing, unsettling, and harrowing, but also, in a way, perversely beautiful. Hold on to your saddle horn—we're riding out!
