Between Vienna and Constantinople 1/ The formation of the Balkan nations
The Balkan Peninsula, traditionally a troubled and turbulent part of Europe, was for most of modern history a battleground for two great powers, symbolized by two metropolises - Habsburg Vienna and Ottoman Constantinople. It was Ottoman Constantinople - Istanbul that became the hegemon of the Balkans and the ruler of a truly multi-ethnic empire. In this work, the authors, who are experts in the history of Southeastern Europe, trace the gradual formation of the identities of the many peoples of the Ottoman Balkans and the difficult and complicated formation of their culture and society. Attention is given to the Slavic peoples - Croats, Serbs, Bulgarians, inhabitants of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonians - but also Romanians and Albanians. The introductory part of the book places the history of the Balkan peoples in this era in a broader context and discusses the emergence, development, structure and culture of the Ottoman Empire as one of the decisive factors in European history of the 16th to 20th centuries, whose legacy remains relevant to Europe today and its peoples.
