Between the millstones: Gaza and its story
Tracing the history of the Gaza region
A world convulsed by Russian aggression against Ukraine and the world order was shaken on October 7, 2023 by the unprecedentedly brutal aggression of Palestinian Islamists against Israel. A new war has broken out, the terrible weight of which has fallen mainly on Gaza and its two and a quarter million inhabitants. The most devastating of the Arab-Israeli conflicts devastated a small area of the southern Levant. Jakub Szántó, a well-known Middle Eastern reporter and bestselling author, traces its history. In a coastal area smaller than Prague, it reveals the roots of the diverse cultural mix that has emerged here among the millstones of ancient civilizations, newer empires and recent history over the last millennia. Through a wealth of personal experience in times of peace and war, and above all through dozens of personal connections, it presents a portrait of a society that has become renowned for its unique colour, resilience and cohesion. At a time of intense social debate, the book offers an unbiased and informed reporting perspective.
