Astrid Lindgren

What was the fate and true face of the most famous writer of children' s books, the author of the stories Pippi Longstocking, The Bullerby Children, The Little Red Riding Hood and many others?

The year is 1929 and twenty-two-year-old Astrid finally takes her three-year-old son Lars, whom she calls Lasse, to Stockholm. As a single mother from the countryside, life is not easy in the capital city of Stockholm, but she is determined to face life head on. When she meets her future husband and their daughter Karin is born, she feels truly happy.

Astrid, full of joy of life and playfulness, invents all kinds of games and stories for her children, sometimes even directly on the topic that the children wish. And because she has loved writing since she was a child, she starts writing them down. This is how the story of an extraordinary girl with two rusty pigtails, living with a monkey and a horse in the strange villa of Vilekule, is born. When Astrid dares to submit the story of Pippi Longstocking to a competition organized by a major publishing house, she doesn' t expect much. Her sudden success as an author comes as a huge surprise to her. She enthusiastically embarks on a career as a children' s writer and becomes a recognized writer of children' s books. But World War II is taking place in the background, and the sensitive Astrid bears the suffering of others with great difficulty. Moreover, her personal life is far from being as simple as it might seem at first glance.

It is published in translation by Romana Hájková.
