Arc de Triomphe
We can try to forget the past, but the past will never forget us...
Ravic is a man without a face and without a country. A German surgeon who fled the Nazi hell is now living illegally in Paris. Undocumented, without a future, he operates under false names in private clinics, while at night he wanders the streets like a shadow. He wrapped his heart in ice and cynicism to survive in a world gone mad. He is driven by one desire alone: to find the Gestapo man who once drove his fiancée to her death. Not even a fateful meeting with Joan Madou, a woman as passionate and devastated as himself, can change that. Far from a romantic idyll, their relationship is more like a union of two desperate castaways in the middle of a crumbling old world. But the desire for revenge is stronger than the fear of deportation, stronger than the love for Joan, and the selfless doctor becomes a ruthless hunter.
One of the author's best-known books captures much of the fate of Remarque himself and his generational contemporaries, whose youth was marked by World War I and later the rise of Nazism. The novel, written in American exile, became a bestseller soon after its publication and was successful on the screen.

They wrote about the book:
It is an eternal mirror of the unteachability that comes with each new generation.
- Martin Preiss, narrator

Remarque has written a story of passionate love that unfolds at a feverish pace. It's a novel that is incredibly readable, gritty and sentimental in the best sense of the word. Ravic is a hero to remember - a man who has lost everything but his surgical skill and human dignity.
- The New York Times

Erich Maria Remarque
The writer and playwright Erich Maria Remarque was born in 1898 into a bookbinder's family from Osnabrück. Through his personal experiences in both world wars, he matured into a man with a completely distinct opinion and became known to millions of readers as a representative of the so-called "other Germany", as a representative of anti-war literature emphasising the individual's right to self-determination and to live in peace and freedom. He soon gained considerable acclaim with his war novel On the Western Front, Peace (which was also made into a film), and his subsequent books, all of which were published in Czech, were equally successful. Following the publication of his early prose works Stations on the Horizon, Empire of Dreams and Gam, as well as his last, unfinished work, Promised Land, Euromedia Group offers reissues of his novels Black Obelisk; Arc de Triomphe; Shadows in Paradise; Love your neighbour; All is quiet on the western front; The way back; Three friends; Heaven knows no chosen ones; Time to live, time to die; A night in Lisbon; The Spark of Life and the short story collection The Enemy.
