Apartment - a novel in two
This audiobook is EXCEPTIONAL in that it can be listened to from either end or beginning. So, you can listen as usual from the first track and start with Daniel's story, OR skip to the thirteenth track and start with Susan's story. OR you can rotate the performers by chapters or any other way. It's up to you. CHOOSE!
One apartment, two strangers. The home of a new couple, or a temporary stopover at the crossroads of their lives?
The Tábor studio apartment finds itself in the alternating care of a disparate pair of young people connected by chance, mutual need and perhaps even love. While Daniel's father, for whom he has conflicting feelings, is dying, Zuzana has left her partner, with whom she has a complicated relationship. He is a sociology graduate who, to his father's disappointment, has not grown up to be a pugnacious thug; she is an avid reader who cannot completely cut herself off from previous relationships. The two are brought together to care for a sick old man facing death in an abandoned villa, where any embarrassing visit can quickly take an unexpected turn. Can their fragile bond bear the weight of so many differences and commitments? And why does life associate us with people with whom we have nothing in common, and separate us from the people we have freely chosen?
What happens when a second author moves into the book? A novel in two: the tense coexistence of a pair of stories that can be perceived in any order - and thus decide how the whole narrative begins and ends.
"The unusual experiment of the German and Šrámková has succeeded. In the end, the two separate parts do not compete with each other, on the contrary, they gradually form an attractive puzzle." - Kristýna Skalníková, Novinky.cz
"Although the prose cannot be read autobiographically, the chosen narrative position suits both contributors very well. Daniel is a haughty intellectual who is not concerned with ordinary problems, while Zuzana is a somewhat chaotic but thoughtful 'wild woman'."- Erik Gilk, A2
She was nervous. That's probably why she was looking at everything like that, to cover it up. And I've been looking at it a little bit: dark hair pulled back into a ponytail, a few strands loosely tucked behind the ear, probably a fake pearl in the nape of her neck. It wasn't painted on, or just so you couldn't see it. Decent girl, neither pretty nor ugly, probably smart. I wasn't looking for a lodger with benefits, so I couldn't have cared less what she looked like, but I didn't want a nag at home. - excerpt from the book
