Alois Jirasek: Cradle

As in the many years later and more successful Lucerna, ancient customary law plays a role in Kolébka set in the Křivoklát region. The cradle, on which the bullfighters rocked the philanderers in front of everyone, was used to publicly punish unfaithful women in the region. In Jirásek's comedy, the local purkrabi is about to shake the handsome granddaughter of the forester, Alena, against whom the purkrabi has been incited by the envious housekeeper Margreta. Fortunately, the young King Václav IV., who likes to hunt here and knows Alena and her grandfather well, returns to the Křivoklát forests. He will lend his royal majesty for a while to Alena's beloved, the student John, and will punish both the burgrave and Margrethe.
