A Treatise on Critical Reason
Hans Albert (b. 1921) builds on the critical rationalism of Karl Popper, whose assumptions (criticalism, fallibilism, realism, pluralism, etc. ) is systematically developed in the context of the theory of knowledge and the theory of science, social and political theory. In discussion with a wide range of "traditional" philosophical trends, it attempts to propose a problem-solving methodology that will correspond to real cognitive practice. A Treatise on Critical Reason (1968), which is published in Czech for the first time, translated and commented by Jitka Paitlova, is an original philosophical text, who guides us with careful arguments between the Skylla of the boundless relativism of hermeneutics, of existentialist and religious decoys and Charybdis' logical determinism of positivist and analytic guarantees. In the end, it all comes down to a free decision to abandon dogmatic belief in certainty and to move closer to the truth.
