A single rose

A Sensual Story of a Woman's Metamorphosis as She Discovers Her Roots, from the Author of the Bestseller The Elegance of the Hedgehog

One day, forty-year-old Rose is surprised by a strange phone call—she is to travel to Japan for the reading of the will of a father she never met. Despite her initial hesitation, she eventually agrees and travels to Kyoto, where she is housed in her father's home. Forced to confront a complicated past, Rose initially feels only bitterness and anger. Paul, her father's assistant, takes her to unusual places every day.
She follows a path planned for her by the deceased, one dotted with temples, gardens, and emotions. Kyoto gradually wins her over, and Rose learns the truth not only about her family but also about herself.

Reviews

A pleasant, peaceful read. At times, the text felt a little contrived, but never overly so. The gentleness and melancholy always prevailed.
In any case, if I had the chance to visit Kyoto now, I wouldn't hesitate.

This is one I really wanted to listen to, not just read. A friend lent me the CD, and I must say, at the beginning, I was thinking, what on earth is this? I hadn't come across such an annoying woman in a book for a long time. But after a while? After the first walk through a Japanese temple, I understood. I understood that I was listening to a cry for help from a deeply broken person with the flair of a Latin American dancer.
I was actually thrilled by the lyrical quality of this work; I think it's a book you have to read/listen to several times.
And Paul? He came into my life at the right time. For me, it's 4.5 stars; I'm saving a little room for the author's other books.
