Amy Byler is an overworked, underappreciated and (almost) single mother. But when her (almost) ex-husband shows up, haunted by guilt, and offers to take care of the kids for a while, Amy hesitates. A little break would do her good, but can she be without the kids? And what will the children do without it? Can their father take care of them? Usually practical and reserved, Amy is finally able to let loose in the whirlwind of the big city. She is discovering a sophisticated life full of culture and other pleasures she had denied herself. She discovers that even a single mother can have some fun and not spend all her time with two teenage children. She even commits to a few blind dates with the encouragement of her friends. But one encounter turns her life upside down. She meets a man whose presence makes her heart race. As the summer draws to a close, Amy realises she will have to make a difficult decision. Will he say goodbye to his old life and open a new, exciting chapter? But won't he lose his newfound self by returning home?

But before she can choose, an unexpected event brings both her worlds together and Amy is in danger of losing everything she has ever dreamed of and loved.
