Sometimes the crooks have the upper hand, other times it's the gendarmes. That's just the way it is. But for justice to be served, the members of the gendarmerie investigation unit have to work tirelessly. After all, the key to solving a case successfully is painstaking detective work, a perfect knowledge of the environment, and a professional honour that won't let the investigators give up at the first sign of failure. The short stories, titled *How the Merry Ladies of Písek Lost Their Laughter and Money*, *When the Cards Don't Lie*, *The Ugly Wednesday of Matěj Joch*, and *Suspicious Courtships with Crime*, will surprise the reader.
