When worst nightmares become reality
France is rocked by a wave of brutal murders. Sadistically raped and murdered girls, a murdered family, random passengers thrown under a train. Still the same brand *e, that appears as a mark on or near the victims, points to a serial killer - only the CSIs soon find out that the murders take place in a mysterious coincidence of time, not only in France, but also in various places in Europe, and there must be more perpetrators. It's like an epidemic of murderous violence.
The frequency and brutality of the murders have increased almost overnight and the police have not been able to keep up with the developments. A search team led by seasoned gendarme Alexis Timée and then his colleague Ludivine Vancker follows the criminals' trail through Scotland, Poland and Canada.
The search takes them, among other things, to the dark parts of the Internet and to the Lebensborn project, the unfortunate legacy of the Nazis. Team Advisor, experienced criminologist Richard Mikelis knows well, that evil and violence is like a drug, and warns, that this time it may be an unlikely conspiracy of deviants, pedophiles, psychopaths and all the outcasts of society, that do not weaken empathy and human feeling in their actions.
Maxim Chattam's books alternate between suspenseful, unexpected plots in rapid succession, and nothing is ever quite as it seems. And so, even a seemingly calm, transparent situation can turn into a fight to the death in no time.
