A. C. Doyle: The Striped Chest

The protagonist of the detective story Parasite is a rational scientist. At a party at a friend's house, he meets an elderly lady with an extraordinary ability to impose her will on others. He is so intrigued by the experiment he witnesses that he longs to investigate Miss Penclos' abilities scientifically. Doyle is known as the author of the immortal detective Sherlock Holmes. However, he is also the author of several dozen fantastic short stories, in which he has managed to rationally explain often complex, seemingly supernatural phenomena with unprecedented bravado. He was a great storyteller and could use a whole arsenal of spooky motifs, as in The Striped Chest, from the abandoned ship at sea to the greedy sailor.
