Snowflakes are falling on the small town of Lost Creek, and in a car seat, a three-year-old boy is crying quietly. His mother, as cold as ice, is slumped over the steering wheel. Madison Harper begins her investigation, resigning herself to the fact that she won't be having the peaceful holiday she had planned to spend with her son and the father she hasn't had contact with for years. The fear in the eyes of the little boy, left motherless just before Christmas, haunts her, and she is determined to bring the killer to justice.
When another dead mother is found a few days later, speculation begins to swirl that a serial killer is on the loose in the town. Two identical murders can't be a coincidence. Lost Creek is in the grip of a snowstorm that complicates the investigation, but perhaps it could also slow the killer's next steps. Or is it just the opposite, and the killer revels in the harsh weather? Who else should start looking over their shoulder if they want to make it to the new year in one piece?
