In the second half of the 18th century, a rebellion breaks out in Tsarist Russia, ruled by Tsarina Catherine the Great, and gradually engulfs the entire empire. Its initiator is the Cossack Yemelyan Ivanovich Pugachev. Against the backdrop of these historical events, the story of the love between a young officer, Peter Grinov, and the daughter of his superior officer, Maria Mironova, unfolds. But at a time when the country is being shaken by atrocities committed by both warring sides, there is no place for love. In addition, their relationship is interfered with by Grinev's rival, the unscrupulous officer Švabrin, who, after being rejected, begins to plot against the lovers.
