When the driver of a grey Mercedes ploughed into a crowd of people in 2009 and escaped the scene scot-free, he left behind eight dead and dozens injured. A year later, burned-out retired detective Bill Hodges receives a letter from him, compelling him to return to the fray and try to catch the psychopathic young man the media have dubbed the "Mercedes Killer". He is aided by his tech-savvy neighbour, Jerome Robinson, and later by Holly Gibney, a woman battling her own demons but blessed with immense intelligence, whose cousin was killed by Hodges' dangerous adversary.

(* 1947) The American writer has become a global phenomenon in the horror, thriller, sci-fi, and fantasy genres. In 1970, he graduated from the University of Maine in Orono with a degree in English and creative writing, and he began to make a name for himself as a short story writer while still a student. When he couldn't find a teaching job after graduation, he worked in a laundry and supplemented his income by writing for men's magazines. His staggering and prolific career began in 1974 with the novel Carrie (published in Czech in 1992), the story of a teenage girl with telekinetic powers, which quickly became a bestseller and opened the doors of Hollywood for the author (1976, dir. Brian De Palma). Since then, King has written dozens more books, which have sold over 350 million copies worldwide and earned him many prestigious awards, including The Bram Stoker Award (the Oscar of horror) and The Edgar Allan Poe Awards (the most prestigious American award in the detective, thriller, and crime fiction genres). Many of King's works have been adapted for the screen by exceptional filmmakers. Among the most famous are The Shining (1980, dir. Stanley Kubrick), Misery (1990, dir. Rob Reiner), The Shawshank Redemption (1994, dir. Frank Darabont), The Green Mile (1999, dir. Frank Darabont), and Doctor Sleep (2019, dir. Mike Flanagan). The trilogy about retired detective Bill Hodges (Mr Mercedes, Finders Keepers, End of Watch, 2014–2016) inspired the successful TV series Mr. Mercedes (2017). The 2020 series adaptation of the novel The Outsider (2018) was also warmly received by audiences and critics alike.
