1984, now a classic work of the anti-utopian genre, is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable novels of the 20th century and a brilliant analysis of totalitarian systems. In 1984, British society lives under the domination of the all-powerful Party. The protagonist Winston Smith, an employee of the Ministry of Truth, robotically survives under the constant surveillance of Big Brother. Continuous wars and lack of basic food add to the general mental emptiness and misery. Winston Smith can only offer one form of resistance: keeps a secret diary. His hope for change comes when he meets the young, rebellious Julia - at first they both only dream of fighting the system, but eventually they pluck up the courage to join the shadow resistance movement. Soon they both fall deeper into the gears of manipulation, spying, physical torture and psychological terror that are inherent in all totalitarian regimes. On a personal level, the audiobook touches on intimate themes such as love, trust and betrayal, while on an abstract level it asks philosophical questions about the nature and knowledge of the world. In Vasil Fridrich's impressive performance, he depicts a vision of a society where there is no place for love, one's own opinion, or even faith in one's own senses, thus warning against any dictatorship of power.
