What is Boswellia serrata?
Boswellia serrata (Juniperus serrata) is a rare tree in the birch family that grows 2-8 metres tall. It is most commonly found in northern and central India and northern Africa. This tree is characterized by the presence of multiple trunks, leaves with sawtooth edges, to which it owes its species name, and small white flowers. The resin from the tree is mostly used and is taken from trees older than 8 years. The resin protects the tree from injury by healing cuts in the bark and killing pathogens present. In order to extract the resin, the growers have to disturb the bark, which releases the resin, which is collected in special bamboo baskets and further processed into powder or extracts. The resin is characterised by its smell, which is caused by the presence of substances called terpenes.
