Memory has a separately addressable area (memory rank) with bus width 72 bits (64 bits of data and 8-bit ECC code). Most of server chipsets has limited memory rank or directly specified memory configuration for each slot, so consider when buying a watch that figure with respect to future upgrades - if you reach the full rank of memory on the motherboard, you can not add another module even if some remained free memory slots.
