The E-flite SR-71 Blackbird Twin 40mm EDF is a scaled down replica of the Lockheed Martin SR-71 "Blackbird", one of the most iconic and unique aircraft of all time, operationally available to a wider range of RC pilots. It was developed in the 1960s to overcome the speed and height of all aircraft and rockets of the time. It holds world records for sustained altitude (25,929 m) and speed (3,529.6 km/h / Mach 3.3). Compatible with the popular 4S 2200 mAh battery and equipped with exclusive Spektrum AS3X technology and optional SAFE Select for easier operation, it is the best handling Blackbird model ever. Optional fixed landing gear with swivel nose wheel allows easy taxiing, take-offs and landings on level ground. For increased speed and climb performance, it can be flown without landing gear, which is ideal when operating on grass. The E-flite SR-71 Blackbird Twin 40mm EDF makes the dream of many aviation enthusiasts and RC pilots to fly the legendary SR-71 come true. It arrives almost completely assembled from the factory and ready to fly right out of the box. It is equipped with a factory-installed Spektrum receiver control unit that includes exclusive AS3X technology and optional activatable SAFE Select assistance.The model is ready to be paired with 5 or more channel DSMX/DSM2 transmitters. When using compatible Spektrum transmitters with AirWare software, it provides real-time telemetry data, including total battery voltage, current and more - with both Smart and conventional batteries.
Powerful drive and durable construction with attention to detail
Two 40mm blower fans and brushless external rotor motors provide excellent power to flight time ratio and are compatible with commercially available and affordable 4S 2200 mAh 30+C batteries. The entire structure is made of rigid EPO foam, complemented by details such as panels and other surface elements in scale, plastic reinforcements on the hull sides and composite reinforcements in the bow and other parts, ensuring high durability while maintaining low weight. The rubber fuselage tip with pitot tube and vertical tail surfaces - including an optional set of red painted stabilizers for improved visibility - are easy to put on and allow for easy removal and replacement.
Flexible take-off and landing options for the ultimate flight experience
A rigid landing gear with a swivel nose wheel and tyres that mimic the look of aluminium-filled tyres on real aircraft allows taxiing, take-off and landing on smooth surfaces. Flying without landing gear offers increased speed and climbability, and thanks to the integrated grips and automatic Hand Launch Assist mode, hand launching and landing on grass is easy. Whether you fly with or without landing gear, the E-flite SR-71 Blackbird Twin 40mm EDF offers a unique experience.
Skill Level 3 - requires experience
Skill Level 3 aircraft are suitable for more experienced RC pilots who already have the necessary skills to build, set up and fly models of a similar category. Although it is the easiest to fly SR-71 ever, it is not suitable as a first RC aircraft for beginners or as a first EDF (Electric Ducted Fan) / jet model for intermediate to experienced pilots. Before your first flight with the SR-71 Blackbird Twin 40mm EDF, you should have the experience and skills needed to safely fly high-performance EDF models such as the E-flite Habu SS (Super Sport) 50mm or 70mm, Viper 70mm and/or larger EDF models. If you are new to flying, the SR-71 is not suitable as your first RC model and it is recommended to start with one of our specially designed trainer aircraft, such as the E-flite® Habu STS (Smart Trainer with SAFE) 70mm EDF. The model is equipped with the exclusive and innovative SAFE technology that allows almost anyone to learn to fly successfully! The Ready-To-Fly (RTF) Basic version includes almost everything you need to fly (except a compatible LiPo battery and charger, sold separately) and is the ideal choice for beginning RC pilots.
Bind-N-Fly version, exclusive technology
The Bind-N-Fly (BNF) version has an engine installed, controller, servos and a Spektrum 2.4 GHz receiver, so all you have to do is to pair the model with your compatible transmitter and do the final assembly and setup. First SR-71 Blackbird model equipped with exclusive Spektrum AS3X and SAFE Select technologies.The AS3X works in the background to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence, providing a firm and stable steering feel as if you were controlling a much larger aircraft. The optional SAFE Select feature offers pitch and roll limitations along with automatic self-levelling that can be switched on and off via a toggle switch - making the Blackbird the easiest to operate of all.
Telemetry options
The SR-71 Blackbird Twin 40mm EDF features a control unit with receiver and controllers thatprovide a range of real-time telemetry data about the propulsion system - including battery voltage, current draw and more - using both Smart and conventional batteries. Data is available when using compatible Spektrum transmitters with AirWare™ capability (including DX6e and 8e, DX6 G2/3 and 8 G2, DX9, NX6, 8 a 10, iX12, iX14, iX20 and others).
Powerful EDF units, chassis and design options
The included fixed landing gear with swivel nosewheel can be mounted - the tires are designed to match the look of the unique aluminum-filled tires used on the real aircraft. The landing gear allows taxiing, take-off and landing on smooth surfaces. Or the landing gear can be omitted for increased speed and performance on climbs and use the integrated hand grips for hand launches and the automatic Hand Launch Assist mode for easy hand launches and grass landings. The EPO foam fuselage includes detailed moulded panels and other mock-up elements, plastic reinforcements on the fuselage sides and composite reinforcements in the nose and other parts. The result is an extremely durable, yet lightweight design with excellent scale appearance, easy maintenance and the best flight characteristics. Factory applied, fully painted and complete with decals that not only look great but also faithfully display the "Habu" markings of aircraft number 17958 - including the optional nose decal.
