Key parameters when choosing a cordless hedge trimmer

Battery voltage

The voltage indicates how powerful a particular cordless hedge trimmer is. Higher voltage means better performance.

• 18 or 24  V - can trim young hedges.
• 36 or 40 V - suitable for older and thicker hedges.

Battery capacity and battery life per charge

Affects how long a trimmer can work on a single charge. Generally ranges from 1.3 to 5.2 Ah. However, the battery life per charge also depends on several other factors. These include battery voltage, battery age, outside temperature, or branch thickness. Depending on the model, a trimmer battery capacity can range between 20 and 75 minutes.

Bar length

• 12-40 cm - can be used to trim small ornamental trees.
• 40-70 cm - suitable for trimming larger ornamental trees and hedges

Blade gap

The blade gap distance theoretically indicates the maximum diameter of branches the model can cut. The gap should be appropriate for the branch thickness, hardness, and hedge density. It should be equal to or greater than the branch diameter; otherwise the trimmer will only nip at them and will tend to get jammed.

• Under 15 mm - common for trimmers with shorter bars.
• 16-34 mm - for trimmers equipped with strong blades and long bars.

• Swivel grip - lets you turn the handle by 180 degrees.
• Safety brake - shuts down the trimmer in case of emergency.
