Traditionally made binchotan or white charcoal is heavier than ordinary charcoal, has a smooth hard surface and rings metallically on impact. The upper porous layer is made up of small cavities oriented in many directions. Impurity ions are attracted and trapped by the coal and beneficial minerals are released from the coal. When using the BLACK+BLUM carafe, first fill the container with drinking water, then carefully insert the binchotan stick into it and store in the refrigerator. The effect of white charcoal is visible after sixty minutes, but the greatest effect is after eight hours. With daily use, activated charcoal retains its properties for 3 months, but you can double its lifetime if you put it in boiling water for 10 minutes and let it dry in the sun. Even after another 3 months, the binchotan finds its place in the home. You can add it to the soil of houseplants, use it as an odour absorber in the cat's litter box, laundry basket or shoe cabinet and it can also absorb moisture from the air.
