It has long been known that vitamin D is important for the proper functioning of muscles, bones and teeth. But it is also of great importance for immunity. The human body can make vitamin D on its own by regularly exposing the skin to sunlight. In our geographical conditions, we don't get as much sun throughout the year, so vitamin D supplementation is needed. However, not everyone regularly consumes foods rich in vitamin D - oily sea fish, egg yolks, some mushrooms, milk and dairy products - so vitamin D supplements are important. (The adult population in the Czech Republic receives from the usual diet (i.e. without supplements) averaged 3.6 ug of vitamin D/day. Less than 1% of adults would meet the new recommendation of 15-20 ug/person/day. ) Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so its absorption in the body is increased when taken with unsaturated fatty acids.
