It does not have connectors for an external antenna. The built-in antenna receives the signal in much the same way as a mobile phone. The advantage, therefore, is not a higher gain, but the possibility of positioning it, for example, on a window on an upper floor facing the transmitter. Inside, where the signal is weaker, you can then connect via this device’s Wi-Fi.
It runs on battery power, which is a real advantage for this sort of outdoor use lasting a few hours. In the mobile app, you can set how long it should take for the device to switch off when inactive, as well as a few other settings.
Overall, in terms of signal gain, a solution using an external MIMO antenna cannot match that of a standard LTE modem. However, this will be significantly more expensive to buy.
For *specific situations, this may be a suitable minimalist solution.
*For example, a secondary O2 SIM card issued for an unlimited tariff does not work in a standard LTE modem (tested). The operator only authorises this type of SIM card for use in this device (TP-LINK M7000, TP-LINK M7100).
