The lids SEAL WELL and NOTHING OPENS. However, you do need to click the lock into place correctly before use; it's located in the middle on the left for each column. It also took me a little while to figure that out.
You can't take out the row for an individual day. If you could, it would be the absolute best dispenser on the market!
