It needs to be shimmed about 8mm (the supplied plastic shims are probably for an older model). So, who has a new x-trail, you need to buy e.g. 16x M8 low-profile nuts (two on top of each other, so they have about 8mm). I printed out a 24x20x8 washer to put the nuts in, otherwise it's very very laborious to get them in (they fall in - so it's handy to have a magnet with you; -).
As long as it's adjusted to the model, it works.
