simplicity, everything is configurable (NFS, Samba, Apple sharing, rights)
console available via ssh
it could run a standard Linux distribution (I haven't looked for it, but it might be worth it)
it didn't even ask what type of RAID I wanted (default is probably reasonable - with two disks it chose SHR mirror)
fixed some directories, but who doesn't use multimedia applications, so it doesn't matter
