There's no fault in the self-cleaning, but you have to stand by it and pour out and clean the solid dirt as instructed. If you leave the cleaning for a longer time, it's probably better to vacuum it first, because then it often reports a dirty brush, so for a regular cleaning, with the dog, you need more often, because the self-cleaning then delays quite a bit.
