Older generations of RPi could be powered from anything, but the newer ones are more caustic. I tried powering the RPi 3 with a 2W tablet charger, but it worked unreliably and the system didn't do well. On the other hand, the original charger, even though it has only 0.5 W more, has proven itself to me and the power supply problems have disappeared.
