The ideal procedure for older beards is the OneBlade with gel and a razor to just lightly take what's left. The gel is not needed to trim a long beard and is not suitable for very short stubble. He takes the hairs quite roughly and skips, it is necessary to take it several times. It wouldn't be enough as a primary tool, but then when I use a razor to fine tune the rest of it, I'm not as fine-tuned as if I had just used a razor from the start. For the hairs, as I originally wanted it, it did not disappoint.
