I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed, because according to the presentation photos it looked like I was going to plug in 2x NVMe drives. Oh, my. One slot is for NVMe (M key), while the other is for SATA NGFF (B key). But I admit that ultimately it's my fault, because it's written there and the description "SATA/NVME Docking station" speaks for itself (one SATA slot, the other NVMe). Next time I need to read more and look less at presentation pictures with two polished patties that both look the same and both look like they are as fast as lightning. I'm kind of considering what to do next. Go back and try and find a port replicator with actually two NVMe bays and a TB3/4 connection to the computer? If I can find it, I think I'll give it a try. Otherwise, I'd rather add a simple fast passive TB3/4 NVMe frame without a port replicator to this one (I hope it's even possible to have two external NVMe drives on one Mac mini via TB3). I was still considering buying some SATA NGFF 2TB instead of the other 2TB Samsung 980 Pro, but the offer is absolutely desperate (it seems that in this category they are just selling unreliable garbage with many bits per cell and terribly small TBW).
A great solution when you have e.g. Mac mini with small storage. I have to say that the 2TB Samsung 980 Pro plugged into this device that was connected to the 2018 Mac mini via the TB3 port had read and write speeds much faster than the internal 256GB storage. If you have it stable on a table/wall/etc. (and you set it up well) and not in the NTB, which you often carry, so there is not even a risk of some wiggling of those (in my opinion very fragile) USB-C/TB3(4) connectors
Besides the NVMe slot (unfortunately only one) it also has some USB-A, USB-C, DP (supposedly with 8K support, but I haven't tested it yet), LAN and audio. So I guess it can be used as a port replicator or dock including 60W PD. The combination of NVMe and USB port replicator is also the only reason I'm considering keeping this device, but I'm still going to try to figure out another solution for a 2x NVMe drive.
High-quality active cooling directly at the drives. I don't have to worry about the NVMe drive overheating. (of course, the activity of the cooling is also a disadvantage)
For this price I would expect more (especially 2 NVMe slots).
Those M.2 drives can only be used in 80 lengths. There are no holes for anything shorter.
Screwing in the M.2 drives is so "humbug" because it is done with screws that also serve to attach the shaft cover to the drives. So the disk(s) are spinning upwards, you have to flatten them with the cover and screw it in I just wouldn't expect this from such a device for about 10k.
The active fan is really miniature (external dimensions are about 40x40, but there is a huge edge, so it's more like 35x35) and it has to spin all the more to have any effect and this is reflected in increased noise. In addition, I am afraid that it will get dusty very quickly, as it is the case with small fans.
The noise level will prevent you from using it with a multimedia centre in the living room.
