Sometimes my SW control from the board to the PWM hub in the case that the fans were spinning at full tilt so I used this to manually control from the outside through one hole perforation.
The box has two functions. Either it passes the PWM signal and current (note the allowed pin load) from the board to the fan(s) for example, and if it loses it generates its own as security. Or if it has no input signal just juice from the sata port it generates its own PWM in the range of 0-100% according to the manual potentiometer setting. A bit of expensive fun, but it works as expected.

You can't increase the fan speed compared to the motherboard control, only if you connect the controller to the power supply and not to the motherboard, but here the control is completely manual and probably not even the right way to use it
