I bought this because the box said “LINUX SUPPORT”, and I was expecting it to work with the drivers in the kernel. The reality is different. The device only comes with an installer for Windows. The official Linux driver on the Mercusys website is marked as beta and is written for old kernels (3.10–6.14), so you won't get anywhere with it on a current system. To get the adapter to work at all on a modern Linux system, the user has to find a driver for the AICSemi AIC8800DC chip on GitHub (from a volunteer, not the manufacturer), install the kernel headers and manually compile the driver via DKMS — and then repeat this compilation after every kernel update. To the chip’s credit, the driver really did compile on the current kernel, so it is possible to get it working. But it's a hassle that a user, spoiled by the much better support of other more common chips with actual “LINUX SUPPORT” in the kernel, is not used to and would rather just throw it away or return it. So, for me, the “Linux support” on the packaging is just marketing that doesn't reflect what you actually get in the box. Anyone who wants a Wi-Fi adapter for Linux that they can just plug in and it works should look for a chip with a driver directly in the kernel (e.g., MediaTek) — this isn't it.

The package/device ONLY includes an installer for Windows (SetupInstall.exe), no Linux driver.
The official Linux driver from Mercusys only targets old kernels (according to their website 3.10–6.14, and it's a "beta" version on top of that)
It only works on a modern core thanks to a third-party patch from GitHub, not thanks to the manufacturer.
You have to compile the driver manually (kernel headers, DKMS) — it's not plug-and-play at all
The chip is an AICSemi AIC8800DC, which is not in the mainline Linux kernel (requires an external driver + closed firmware that is permanently injected into the kernel)
When plugged in, the adapter identifies itself as a USB "flash drive" and needs to be switched to Wi-Fi mode (usb_modeswitch).

Linux support is stated. But in reality it is worse than non existent. Mercusys site contains some archive with source code. PDF instruction is useless and looks like AI generated. You need to do much much more than it states in order to compile kernel module.
But worse that this. Source code is incompatible with Linux LTS kernel. It works only on really old obscure kernel versions.

When it worked, it worked nicely and had really decent reception, unfortunately it didn't last long. I used it with Ubuntu 24, checked compatibility with the manufacturer and followed the documentation until the instructions for compiling the drivers/prepared scripts stopped working. After an hour of debugging I managed to get everything up and running. Unfortunately it lasted about a week before I got to the PC, which was fully offline again and the adapter wasn't reporting to life. I have no idea what happened and I don't care. If you are not fond of writing drivers, I recommend to avoid it.
