I give it five stars because it filters out limescale. I use the filters exclusively for the coffee machine and also the kettle. as for how long it can filter water effectively, it will probably depend on the hardness of your water. one cartridge lasts me three weeks. I wanted to do a water analysis after three weeks of use but haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm interested in this mainly because of my feeling that when the fitr loses its effectiveness, everything that it captured before starts to leak out and thus the water quality may be worse in concentration of undesirable substances than without fitr.

Regarding recycling, I recommend cutting the used cartridge after it has dried, and the contents can be used in pots as a top layer. There will be clean plastic.
