HDDs require an external power supply (transformer to a power outlet) and once you plug in the power, the adapter turns on the drive even if it is not connected to USB. This can lead to damage to the disk if you are not careful when handling it while it is connected to power.
It is also not suitable for more permanent connections where you would like the drive to shut down with the PC.
In both cases, I recommend combining it with a switchable power outlet so that you can turn off the power before handling the drive or when you don't want to use it.
