The plane (48cm) is already too big for the technological design (not enough momentum for the size => too light). We have a 25cm and a 48cm at home and I can see that the optimum is somewhere in between. I recommend 35-40 cm size for good flying.
The material is durable, even small children won't destroy it easily (it's not polystyrene, it's foam).
