"This review is deliberately long. It reflects the way I think and the way the book affected me." Autism Without a Mask is for me one of the most important books I have ever read/listened to.
Not because she "gave me a diagnosis", but because she allowed me to understand my own nervous system for the first time.
What I had considered all my life to be a personal failure, weakness or "weirdness" suddenly appeared as a logical reaction of a neurodivergent body to a world built for someone else.
The book describes camouflage very accurately - not as a skill, but as a long-term survival mechanism that is extremely exhausting and destructive.
As I read, I realized that most of my functioning was not "me" but an automatic protection system that had one goal: to survive in an environment that was unpredictable, overwhelming and dangerous.
The most powerful thing about this book is that it is not based on outside observation, but on the lived experience of autistic people.
The descriptions of overload, collapse, hyperfocus, bodily reactions, regulation and return to safety are not abstract - they are physical, concrete and precise.
In many passages I felt that someone had finally put a name to what I had felt all my life, but I didn't have the language for it.
Thanks to this book I understood that:
the problem is not my sensitivity, but the environment
the problem is not my fatigue, but the long-term switching of my nervous system
the problem is not "inadequacy" but living in a permanent mask
The book didn't give me a manual on how to be "normal".
She brought me something much more important: understanding myself, my body and the boundaries I've been pushing my whole life because I thought I had to.
At the same time, I very much appreciate that the book respects diversity - in experience, identity and ways of regulation. It doesn't force anything, it doesn't categorize anything.
On the contrary, it gives space for each autistic person to find their own way of existing without the mask.
For me personally, this book is an essential step towards that:
stop destroying yourself with power
stop punishing yourself for overloading
and finally start functioning in a way that is sustainable
I would recommend this book:
late diagnosed autistic people
people who have "functioned" all their lives but at the cost of collapses
professionals who want to understand autism from the inside, not just by criteria
For me, it wasn't just reading.
It was a rediscovery of self.
