It's plugged in.
This cable is some weird hybrid. It has 1x 4-pin PWM male, 1x 4-pin PWM female, and then 3x weird 4-pin PWM size connectors, but only 3 of the 4 wires are connected. It probably works by reading the speed of only the first fan plugged into the 4-wire connector. It is therefore completely unsuitable for connecting different types/sizes of fans.
It can only be used to connect the same fans.
