It can only handle a limited subset of what one would expect. I don't recommend it for the cheap apple price. You'd better buy for a quarter a knockoff that will perform at a similar level.
works on smaller devices, like a usb key or SD card reader
although the external power supply is connected, it can't power more power-hungry peripherals, e.g. external ssd drive
cannot connect some usb flash drives
although it is designed for this purpose, it cannot connect a camera, e.g. my Nikon D7000 SLR
irrational price for apple accessories
