EM5 je navržen jako D/A převodník/zesilovač pro špičková sluchátka s řadou různých konektorů, včetně symetrických XLR a 4,4 mm. Lze jej také použít jako D/A převodník a předzesilovač v kombinaci se samostatným výkonovým zesilovačem nebo aktivními reproduktory.
Na druhou stranu EA5 funguje jako streamer typu "vše v jednom". Postrádá sice symetrické výstupy a nabízí pouze jednostranný sluchátkový výstup, ale přidává k tomu plnohodnotný integrovaný zesilovač, takže jej lze použít přímo k napájení reproduktorové soustavy.
