Types of industrial vacuum cleaners

There are three basic types of industrial vacuum cleaners. They differ in the way the vacuumed dirt is stored or in the way the filter is cleaned. What are the basic features of industrial vacuum cleaners and their specific types?

1. Industrial vacuum cleaners with automatic dust extraction have a special function that sends a burst of air into the hose, thus expelling all trapped dirt. You can use the vacuum cleaner for sawdust and other dirt, and they can also handle both dry and wet vacuuming.
2. Industrial bagless vacuum cleaners use a removable container that you can just wash after vacuuming - no need to buy any extra bags. These industrial water vacuum cleaners are especially suitable for wet cleaning.
3. Industrial bagged vacuum cleaners use dirt bags for advanced filtration, making it highly efficient. The bag is then simply removed and discarded.

Understanding the performance and power consumption

When choosing, it is important to take these two parameters into account. At first glance they may seem similar, but the difference between them is fundamental.

The suction performance depends on several parameters, but above all it indicates how well the industrial vacuum cleaner will vacuum.

• Suction performance is one of the most important parameters for an industrial vacuum cleaner.
• You will recognise the high suction power not only by the coverage, but also by the construction of the appliance and the type of nozzle and brush.
• You can find the performance on the energy label. It is marked A to G, with A being the best.

Choose an industrial vacuum cleaner with low power consumption

Power consumption does not determine the vacuuming and performance quality of the appliance, but merely tells you how much electricity it consumes.

• When buying a professional vacuum cleaner, choose a model with the lowest  power consumption possible to reduce the electricity consumption.
• Industrial vacuum cleaners are designed for heavy-duty cleaning, so their power consumption values tend to be slightly higher than for standard household vacuums. Still, the appliance should be as economical as possible.

Container volume

Make sure your chosen vacuum cleaner has a sufficiently large tank. This will ensure comfortable use without having to empty the container during cleaning.

• The standard volume for a professional vacuum cleaner ranges from approx. 15 to 35 litres.
• Tanks can be made of plastic or durable metal; the latter is suitable for vacuuming chemical waste.

Some models of construction vacuum cleaners have a filter cartridge, which can be washed with water if it clogs up. Others are equipped with a cotton, paper, or washable HEPA filter to capture fine dust microparticles. A foam filter is good for wet vacuuming with a workshop vacuum cleaner.

Noise levels

Buying a quieter device means your vacuuming will be more comfortable and won't bother everybody around you. The quietest industrial vacuum cleaners emit around 60 dB, which is comparable to normal human speech. The loudest ones have a noise level of 85 dB or higher.

Using industrial vacuum cleaners on construction sites and in professional settings

If you need to use a vacuum cleaner to clean up construction dust or vacuum pieces of rubble and other larger rubbish, it's necessary to buy a quality vacuum cleaner with high suction power, specifically designed for the purpose.

• High performance correlates with higher power consumption - construction vacuum cleaners don't let you save much, since reducing their energy consumption too much would interfere with their efficiency.
• Choose a large dust container of 25 liters or more.
• Instead of the price, focus mainly on the quality. A cheap vacuum cleaner won't survive on a construction site or in industrial settings for long.

Industrial vacuum cleaner functions

Workshop vacuum cleaners have a lot of different functions that make them more efficient. Wet vacuuming, energy saving, or different surface cleaning are common.

• Clogged filter indicator  notifies you when you need to replace or clean the vacuum cleaner filter.
• Performance regulation is useful for construction vacuum cleaners, since you can manually adjust the output as required.
• Shampooing - this function is available for vacuum cleaners designed for wet vacuuming. It allows you to deep-clean both hard floorings and carpets.
• Blower allows you to remove the dirt from open air spaces and other places where vacuuming is not really feasible.

Industrial vacuum cleaner attachments

Special interchangeable nozzles and attachments ensure multifunctional use.

• Flexible suction hoses are designed for carpets, smooth floorings and tiles.
• Wide nozzles allow you to vacuum the plaster and other large dirt without clogging the suction hose.
• Shampooing attachments are used by workshop vacuum cleaners for wet vacuuming.
• Upholstery brushes can gently remove dirt from chairs and other upholstered furniture.

An important feature of an industrial vacuum cleaner is the length of the cable, which determines the action radius. The long cable will not restrict you in larger spaces and will spare you from having to swap sockets.
