Serrapeptase (or also serratiopeptidase) is a proteolytic enzyme, which means it breaks down proteins. It was originally discovered in the digestive tract of the silkworm, where it helps the caterpillars break down the pupa. Today it is produced by fermentation of special bacteria (Serratia E15) and is used as a product with strong anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects. Salutem Pharma's Serrapeptase contains an enterosolvent coating that protects the enzyme serrapeptase from the action of gastric juices so that the enzyme can pass through the stomach to the intestines where it is absorbed.
