Women
Frances McGrath is a young American woman from an upper-class family. When her brother is killed in Vietnam in 1965, Frances decides to enlist as a nurse, despite her parents' strong disapproval. Upon arriving in Vietnam, the inexperienced girl is overwhelmed by the reality of war, the daily struggle between life and death, hope and betrayal. But she also finds friendship and love. However, the war doesn't end for Frances and other veterans. Another battle begins upon their return to a changed and divided America, to angry protestors, in a country that wants to forget Vietnam.
Through the story of Frances McGrath, Kristin Hannah pays tribute to all the young women of the medical staff who served in Vietnam and about whom little was said for a long time. The author delivers a novel about pain, self-sacrifice and heroism, about the power of friendship, misunderstanding and contempt, but also about how long and difficult it is to heal a broken heart and soul.
