The novel Firewing is the story of a dream of flying. Growing up in a family of Finnish immigrants in America, little Kaarle wants to be like his "namesake" Charles Lindbergh and fly in the sky. In the 1930s, during the Great Depression, the family moves to Soviet Karelia, a "workers' paradise" And Kaarle, now Gennady for a change, really flies. But only until, by an unfortunate coincidence, he ends up in the gulag. After the outbreak of World War II, however, he is useful again - pilots play a crucial role in the Soviet fight against Germany, and Gennady becomes a hero. But not for long. Stalin does not forgive the failure, and so the downed "deserter" finds himself in the gulag again. From here, for the last time, he will be rescued by the passion of his life. For the last great journey, Kaarle, Charles, Gennady are heading into the endless cosmos. The publication of the book was supported by FILI - Finnish Literature Exchange.
