Whimsical summer

A story of three days and three nights, in which flings and love adventures with unexpected guests briefly disrupt the peaceful life in a small town on the Orš River, Krokové Vary. The life of a canon, former major, spa owner, and his jealous wife Kateřina is completely turned upside down by the magician and the beautiful Anna. The magic of The Whimsical Summer lies not so much in the story itself, as in the perfect capture of the atmosphere of a sleepy Czech small town and in Vančura' s perfect and rich Czech.

Jiří Menzel made an equally magical film based on the novel. Rudolf Hrušínský, František Řehák, Vlastimil Brodský, Míla Myslíková, the young Jana Preisová and the director himself are unforgettable.
