Where the grass blooms
On the night of May 27, 1980, the worst massacre of civilians ordered by their own government in the country's modern history took place in Gwangju, South Korea. Under the pretext of combating communist subversion, the leaders of the state approved military intervention to suppress popular unrest, which was in fact a manifestation of dissent against the prevailing authoritarian regime. The novel follows the lives of several young characters who intersect on that fateful night. Survivors must face persecution by state authorities and their own memories of the trauma they have experienced.
