Victor Hugo: Ruy Blas

Victor Hugo's romantic tragedy Ruy Blas is a story of great love, dastardly intrigue and political manipulation that rings surprisingly simultaneously, even though more than two hundred years have passed since the author's birth. Victor Hugo wrote Ruy Blase in a few weeks. He found inspiration in literature and in real historical figures, which, however, he did not portray faithfully. As France celebrated the bicentenary of the birth of its great classic, Ruy Blas reappeared on its first French stage in 2001 in a remarkable production that highlighted themes of human identity, the dream, political machinations and the subversion of order. Now you can see that Ruy Blas is not just an academic drama in mechanical alexandrines. Certainly the performance of Václav Vosky will help.
