Václav Erben: The Embarrassing End of Knight Bartholomew
A historical novel from the second half of the 15th century, i.e. from the reign of King George of Poděbrady. The main character is the knight Bartholomew of Loučka. The elderly knight is hired by the highest mintmaster of the Bohemian Kingdom to transport and protect the silver and coins that were sent from the Vlašský court in Kutná Hora to Prague. His stereotypical life is disrupted by the death of his unfaithful wife, who has run off with her lover. It left large debts which Bartholomew had to pay.
The inheritance left behind by the tragically deceased husband of Bartholomew's sister may seem to be a way out of the unfavourable situation.
