Welcome to Jáchymov, the town of spa pleasures and uranium mines!
A girl from England who went to Czechoslovakia in August 1968 to visit the family of the father she had never met in Jáchymov, has the ground slipping away. But Angela's life wasn't over then, and as fate would have it, she is reunited after many years with her former fiancé Henry, who has followed in her footsteps for therapeutic reasons, accompanied by his lifelong partner Suzanne. The Hotel Sklodowska, where the British couple stay, is full of suspicious existences, from the old minion Schmitt with a complexion like rotten wood and the look of a killer, to a group of foreign scientists whose behaviour has earned them the nickname "radioactive freaks" from the staff. The biggest mystery, however, seems to be the owner of the hotel herself, Dr. Estela Hans, who raises more and more questions in Henry's mind. That is, until the arrival of a mysterious stranger, who shares a mysterious bond with the surprised hostess and shows an almost suspicious interest in the Jáchymov underground...
This successful first novel, oscillating between thriller, historical fantasy and black comedy, won the Literary Award for Debut of the Year.
